while i sit down to write This rating makes my eyes burn. So many thoughts go through my head. As I comb them and tie them with string, one stands out from the rest:
Koreans are too good at it.
You may be wondering what I mean. What are Koreans "too good" at?
Take a simple trope (right person, wrong time) and wash it in bright light, sprinkle it with fresh nostalgia, and of course, utterImmersewith a cold and hard realism.
20 century girlis a South Korean romantic drama produced by Yong Film, written and directed by Bang Woo-ri, and starring Kim Yoo-jung, Byeon Woo-seok, Park Jung-woo, and Roh Yoon-seo. Since its release, it has been Netflix's number one movie in South Korea for three consecutive weeks and it has been piling up.more than eight million hours of viewingglobal. It follows Na Bo-ra (Kim), a young high school student who is assigned to watch the crush on her best friend Baek Hyun-jin (Park), so said friend, Kim Yeon-doo (Roh ), is well known. him before she returns from the US, where she will undergo major heart surgery.
The blue light was used to show simple memories of normal, everyday things, like when Bo-ra met Hyun-jin, the scenes at the festival, or the scene where everyone goes to the amusement park. These memories had one thing in common: the blue colors mixed together, showing us a happier time filled with bright and happy events.

Additionally, major plot points and major moments in the film also had blue lighting. A vibrant color that takes weight away from our eyes and highlights certain memories that an older Bo-ra remembers more clearly. This clever use of lighting felt like a form of hypnosis. As soon as I saw these scenes, my emotions became a constant flux. It felt like a pillow was cradling my head.
I often worried that this movie would take a predictable path, with Bo-ra falling for Hyun-jin or his best friend Poong Woon-ho (Byeon). A predictable plot pointtatIt happens when Hyun-jin falls in love with Bo-ra, and he hoped that Woon-ho would also confess his feelings to him.
During these scenes, a fuzzy orange light represented the "haze" that love exposes a person to. This was a brilliant choice as it effectively conveyed the strong emotions and feelings the characters would feel. every time i sawgo deadLight, my eyes would actually hurt a bit; the force of the light is too much to handle. This reflects how the characters felt, especially with Bo-ra's angry and passionate reactions when Hyun-jin asked her out of her.

Hyun-jin started to fall for Bo-ra after she showed how strong and independent she was, hence the lighting used during the confession and when he bought her some blackberry extract. The orange glow represented the infatuation that blinded him. This is further emphasized when he was abruptly brought back to reality when she rejected him, since all of her scenes with her after that were in blue light (symbolizing friendship).
Most of Woon-ho's scenes with Bo-ra were also lit in orange to show what he is like.similarfelt for her. The moment they shared in the closet on a school trip or when he tells her that he works across the street from her family's video store, both moments are important to the development of her relationship. Orange showed the intensity of the characters' feelings.U.Salso feel the intensity.
In the end, Bo-ra took a liking to Woon-ho and they eventually started dating. As before, these scenes were filled with blurry orange, representing their total crush on each other. However, when Yeon-doo returned from the US, it was revealed through a flashback that the person had Yeon-doo.ThoughtWhat Hyun-jin was actually was Woon-ho.
In short, Bo-ra and Yeon-doo had feelings for the same boy.
What struck me the most about the love triangle was how it was resolved. In fact, he expected Yeon-doo to end his friendship with Bo-ra (or at least distance himself from her) after finding out the truth, but then he says, "When [Poong Woon-ho] gets in the way of our friendship, I can let go." a hundred or even a thousand times. [But] it's important to meellathe most".

While this scenario may seem silly to others (as a minor character conveniently puts his feelings aside for the main character's sake), this particular scenario greatly emphasizes the importance of friendship, which is a central theme in other popular K-dramas likewe are all dead, hospital playlist, yprison playbook. As someone who deeply values her friendships (and has never been in a romantic relationship), I found the path they took refreshing and realistic, especially at a time when people are celebrating "Friends Day" or posting Instagram photos of their friends. groups of friends who are having fun.
However, despite the truly moving emphasis this film placed on friendship, the real kicker was the ending.
With the love triangle resolved, Bo-ra tried to find Woon-ho again after learning he was moving to New Zealand to be with his mother and five-year-old brother, eventually making it with Yeon-doo and Hyun-jin. . aid.

In the farewell scene, the orange lighting returns on a sadder note. Naturally, we expect the scene to have blue lighting, but that wouldn't fit. The orange is a way of showing how they were so in love with each other that the rest of the world didn't seem to care. Bo-ra was hyper focused and she hoped that she would at least have this last goodbye. The scene went dark as Woon-ho left for a reality show. As she did so, she remembered all the little things she'd noticed about him before. One of those little things was her camera.

The cameras are an important part of the film. We learn more about Woon-ho through his perception of the world as he sees it. The cameras usually symbolize the memories of the past, showing that he wanted to remember and record as much as possible so as not to lose those memories. Many of us can understand that in the age of smartphones and social media.
After that scene, they kept in touch via email, as long-distance lovers do, and Bo-ra happily celebrated the new millennium by reading a particularly heartfelt message from Woon-ho. But after a while, the emails stopped coming and it was revealed through a voiceover that Bo-ra never saw Woon-ho again.

When the movie went black I was reeling. I went into this experience with the attitude that I would try to find a unique angle from which to write this review, but as the movie progressed I got carried away because it was the only way.they canTo write a review is to fully experience the effects, sounds, and narration.
While most CVHS students may not identify with the great love experienced by Na Bo-ra and Poong Woon-ho, they certainly will identify with the pain that ends so quickly. When you have something good in your life, you want to keep it as long as possible. exactly thisIdeaLosing that good, pure thing scares most of us. But the reality is that no matter how hard you try, no one will ever get it perfect.
No one has a pain free life, we all have our issues to deal with.20th century girlproves just that. Two teenagers fall in love, but practical situations separate them, never to be together again. It works the same way with other relationships.
One day you may have a deep and satisfying conversation with someone about a mutual pet interest, but you never see them again after that. After all, you never havehe knewmutual. But you did it at the time, so you appreciate it. However, they do not try to return to him. What happened happened, but it's time to move on. Find new people to talk to. Find new connections to make.
Life goes on whether you like it or not.

Manizeh's rating:9/10 stars. For K-Drama fans, this is definitely a movie to add to your watch list. I would also highly recommend it for hopeless romantics or those who just need a good wine. Accurate and clean storytelling is always a plus, although there are cliché plots and unresolved endings. Still, the use of unique character traits against the film's dreamlike backdrop kept the scenes entertaining. After all, it serves as a nice escape from reality, for the first 90 minutes. But the last 30? Just a cruel reminder that things don't always go our way.
Nicole's rating:10/10, without a doubt. I recommend watching this for a good long whoop. The open ending and the heartbreaking ending are very well done. The amount of symbolism in this film will make you cry. For people who love a strong and funny love story, this is the movie for you. But be warned: the ending is a painful, very painful reminder of real life.
