SAIC's own MG Motor has developed a more advanced and higher quality electric vehicle thanMG ZS EV, despite the car's lowest price positioning – the MG Mulan. The company offers the new electric hatch as an MG4 EV in the UK and as an MG4 Electric in EU markets.
At the European launch of the MG4 EV on September 13, 2022, Camille Caux, product manager for MG Motor France, announced that it will be available in two more variants in the future, one with greater range and one with increased performance. We'll call these variants "Touring" and "Sport" respectively for ease of understanding until the MG marketing team reveals their real names. Here's everything we know about upcoming variants and the standard MG4 EV.

11. MG4 EV FAQ
11.1. What is the MG4 Electric release date?
11.2. What is the price of the electric MG4?
11.3. Which models are rivals of the MG4 EV?
MG4 EV Touring (Gamma-Variante)
The MG4 EV Touring will feature a 77 kWh battery that will provide a WLTP range of over 500 km (311 miles). This is a direct confirmation from MG's French product manager, Camille Caux:
We are planning a 77 kWh battery with a range of over 500 km.Camille Caux, Product Manager, MG Motor France (MG4 EV digital debut September 13, 2022)
The new long-range variant will make the MG4 EV a more attractive choice over the ID.3, which tops out at 265 miles (426 km) in the UK.
MG4 EV Sport (Performance-Variante)
Regarding the MG4 EV Sport, Caux said MG is planning "a sporty MG4 with all-wheel drive".
Thanks to the MSP platform, we can put a second engine on the front wheel and give it a really spicy flavor with at least twice the power of the MG4 you tested today and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than four seconds.Camille Caux, Product Manager, MG Motor France (MG4 EV digital debut September 13, 2022)
With a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint time of less than four seconds, the MG4 EV Sport challenges theVW ID.3 GTX. It could be identical to China's MG Mulan Triumph Edition.
Like the Mulan Triumph Edition, the MG4 EV Sport can be lifted on unique 18-inch wheels wrapped in 235/45 R18 Bridgestone tires. The SUPER XDS electronic differential lock to improve traction may also be exclusive to the Go-Fast variant. Inside, the MG could use Alcantara sports seats with 6-way power adjustment and 2-way lumbar support for the driver and 4-way manual adjustment for the front passenger.
If the specifications were the same as the Mulan Triumph Edition, the MG4 EV Sport's twin-engine powertrain could produce a combined output of 330 kW (443 hp) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft.) of total torque. Likewise, a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h could take just 3.8 seconds. Unlike the Mulan Triumph Edition, the MG4 EV Sport can feature the new 77kWh battery which can allow for a WLTP range of around 250 miles.
Priced in the 30k range, the MG4 EV Sport would be a good choice for anyone looking for an affordable performance hatch with a low running cost. Only time will tell if it steals sales from the £42,695 VW Golf R, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds.
The MG4 Electric is an aggressively styled electric hatchback. According to SAIC, it is the first truly global car from the MG brand and the design is such that it appeals to both Chinese and global customers. Up front, the MG4 features a shark-shaped nose, petal-shaped three-head headlights, a muscular bumper with vertical side air intakes, a split lower air intake and a lip spoiler.
The MG4 Electric has a sporty look on the sides with a high waistline, sharp creases on the door panels and shoulders, orange brake calipers, and two-tone black and silver alloy wheels in a streamlined design typical of an EV. The charging port is located on the side panel above the left wheel arch.
At the rear, the MG4 Electric features a squat stance, a large, nearly full-width taillight (with the SAIC Vision LED lighting system), a clean bumper, a split rear spoiler, and a large SUV-style skid plate. Aside from the low height, it looks like a crossover in many ways.
In the UK, the MG4 EV will be available in Volcano Orange (new), Camden Gray (new), Holborn Blue, Dynamic Red, Black Pearl and Arctic White. The MG will also offer a two-tone roof option.
The MG4 features a sleek, contemporary interior, featuring a sleek dash with slim air conditioning vents, a floating center console with drive mode selector and electric parking brake, compact two-spoke steering with flat top and bottom, and a brilliant white and gray bicolor upholstery. The instrument cluster is a compact 7-inch screen attached to the dash. A 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display sits in the center of the dash.
While the ZS EV evolved from an internal combustion engine (ZS) model, the MG4 Electric is a bespoke electric vehicle based on the Nebula platform. That's what MG is calling its new platform at home. In Europe, the brand name used is Modular Scalable Platform, or MSP for short. In a report published on June 26, 2022autohome.com.cncalled it a “superplatform” built from the ground up exclusively for electric vehicles. "E2" is the internal codename according to the Chinese report, which means it is the successor ofMilagre MGPlatform E1.
The scalable design of the MSP allows the development of electric vehicles with wheelbases between 2,650 and 3,100 mm. On the new platform, it is possible to design electric vehicles with different body styles: hatchback, sedan, sedan, SUV and van. He will play a key role in MG's growth in Europe.
When development on Marvel X was completed, work on the Nebula Platform (MSP) began immediately, according to Kang Huaping, vice president of the SAIC Innovation Research and Development Institute. SAIC has invested heavily in this platform to achieve standardization, modularization, integration and intelligence. In the future, Roewe, Feifan (formerly R) and Zhiji brands will also receive models based on this special EV platform.
The MG electric model is 4,287 mm long, 1,836 mm wide and 1,504 mm high. The compact electric car has a generous 2705mm wheelbase. Competes with the VW ID.3, Cupra Born,Renault Mégane E-Tech, e asNissan Leaf.
Performance and Reach
In the UK, the MG4 EV will be available in Standard Range and Long Range variants, both with a single engine in the rear. The Standard Range variant engine produces 125 kW (168 hp) and 184 lb.-ft. torque, while the Long Range variant's engine is 150 kW (201 hp) and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The former has a 50.8kWh battery that offers a WLTP range of 218 miles, while the latter has a 61.7kWh battery that offers a WLTP range of up to 281 miles.
The MG4 EV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds (Standard Range) / 7.7 seconds (Long Range) and has a top speed of 100 mph. We list load times and other specifications in a table at the end of this section.
The MG4 Electric has a 50:50 weight distribution, which should improve handling. It also gets dual pinion electric steering (DP-EPS) instead of traditional rack and pinion electric steering (REPS), at least in China. The new technology is coming to the auto industry just in time, as customers around the world increasingly prefer SUV body styles and electric powertrains. Driving loads are higher on electric vehicles than on internal combustion engines due to the weight of heavy batteries. They require a different steering system to handle the extra weight. With DP-EPS, the primary sprocket is optimized for vehicle dynamics and performance, and the secondary sprocket is optimized for auxiliary.
A pack of batteries
MG says it was able to keep the car's height so low because of its exceptionally low battery, which is part of the "One Pack" battery system (called the Rubik's Cube battery system in China). This is the slimmest battery developed by parent company SAIC.
The one-pack battery system with its horizontal cell arrangement allows for an industry-leading minimum battery height of 110 mm. Battery length and width are 1690mm and 1300mm respectively. SAIC used the new Cell-to-Pack or CTP technology that makes the MG4 Electric one of the brand's most advanced electric vehicles.
With the One Pack battery system it is possible to build batteries with energy storage capacities from 40 kWh to 150 kWh. Battery swapping is also possible, meaning SAIC will be able to sell MSP-based EVs with BaaS (Battery as a Service). Zhu Jun, Deputy Chief Engineer at SAIC, says users can upgrade and even switch to a smaller battery as needed. Ningde E-CON Power System, a Shanghai-based E-CON Power System company in which SAIC has a 30% stake through Ningde Jiaocheng SAIC Industry Upgrade Equity Investment Partnership (LP), manufactures the battery for the MG4 Electric.
The MSP platform also allows for 800 volt charging technology. Equipped with 800-volt charging technology, the models achieve a range of 200 km (124 miles) in just five minutes of charging and take just 15 minutes to charge to 80%. Models equipped with 400-volt regular charging technology achieve a range of 100 km (62 miles) on a five-minute charge and take 30 minutes to charge to 80%. Autohome's report suggests that bi-directional charging will also be possible on models based on the Nebula Platform (MSP).

In its December 7, 2022 press release, the automaker announced that the MG4 hatchback had received a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. The MG4 scored 83% for Adult Occupant Protection and 80% for Child Occupant Protection in safety tests. Euro NCAP also mentioned that this rating applies to the RHD and LHD versions of the MG4.
The automaker noted that this is the first test result to include its new Scalable Modular Platform (MSP), which will underpin multiple next-generation MG models. We can expect these cars to score an equally satisfying safety rating alongside future MG4 variants.
MG4 EV to Australia
In the July 22, 2022 export start announcement, SAIC confirmed that the MG4 EV would be launched in 2023 in Australia, New Zealand, South America, Mexico and the Middle East. Speaking of Australia, where the ZS EV is the country's cheapest electric vehicle and ranked second in EV sales nationally in 2021, the local subsidiary is saving the launch announcement for a later date. A spokesman for MG Australia said a launch was under consideration and the local subsidiary was studying possible variants of the model. The Drivenreported on July 27, 2022.
