Vembu has released a new version of Vembu BDR Suite. In this blog post, VEmbu BDR Suite v5.0 RC has released news. I will show you some of the new features included in this new version.
It's been a while since I wrote a review for Vembu. My last release was v4.0; from this release to the new v5.0 RC many features have been added to Vembu BDR such as backups in Office 365, backups in AWS or Azure now Google Workspace.
What's new in this new Vembu BDR Suite v5.0RC
In this new version, Vembu has extended its Vembu BDR package with hybrid solutions. Backed by cloud infrastructure, everything is internal in the local environmentthis isthird party cloud service provider(like AWS, Azure, Google). As a result, Vembu has expanded its support offering for future workloads,
Import note:This new version of Vembu BDR Suite 5.0 RC has been extensively tested for production use, but this RC version does not support upgrading existing installations. Vembu expects to release BDR Suite 5.0 GA within a few weeks, and this GA version will support upgrades from previous versions.
Please also inform everyone that this is a Release Candidate (RC) release. The RC versions are the first release after the Beta version. This is still a fully working version in production; it is not final version (GA) yet. The final version may include additional improvements and even bug fixes.
Update 10/14/2021:Just 2 days after I wrote this blog post, Vembu released General Available (GA). Vembu BDR Suite v5.0 GA can be used for both new production deployments and upgrades. Customers using previous versions of Vembu BDR Suite can now upgrade to BDR Suite v5.0.
Below is a list, some screenshots and details of all the new features included in this release of Vembu BDR Suite v5.0RC.
New features
- Hyper-V virtual machine replication
After replication of VMware VMs in this new release, Vembu has also added replication of Hyper-V VMs.
Customers can now replicate their Hyper-V VMs from one host to another. This can be done on the internal infrastructure but also on any external DR site. For disaster recovery, customers can fail over all their virtual machines that have been replicated to your disaster recovery site. Failover can be a full restore or just a few VMs that need to be replaced at the first site.
- Immediate live boot migration
What is Instant Boog Live Migration? This means you can now run and migrate VMs directly from your backup infrastructure.
Using this option, customers can now reduce their RPO to a few seconds on their backup VMs. This task runs in the background while the VM is running and is ready for use in your backup infrastructure without downtime.
This option works in two steps. First we need to select Restore and use Instant Boot VM. The virtual machine will start automatically and be ready to use.
We can choose hypervisor storage or use local BDR (backup repository) storage to allocate this instant boot VM.
Once the VM with the backup infrastructure is up and running, we can perform a live migration to our production environment.
- Parallel processing of virtual machines
With this new feature, we can now back up multiple jobs in parallel to a single host. Customers can customize the number of VMs/disks that can run concurrent tasks, which can be done in a single task.
Example:We have created a job to back up 5 VMs and 2 disks and have chosen that the three jobs can be run simultaneously within the same job. Parallel VM processing will run jobs for 3 VMs (or disks) simultaneously in the same backup job.
- Disks rotated as a backup repository
In this function, rotating disks in the backup repository, it is possible to use several external hard disks to store backup data and change them regularly.
This resource is not a rotated Tab Library unit. However, it works similarly, and the backup repository will never run out of space as there are additional drives that can be added to the repository to allow backups to continue.
Observation:This option is not available for Office 365 backups or offsite replication.
- Optimized backup right where you left off
This feature is convenient to resume backups that have been interrupted or cancelled. In short, this feature is a wrap-up and Backup will pick up right where it left off.
- GFS retention (grandfather-father-child)
GFS has been a popular backup tool since IT started scheduling backups of its environment. This daily, weekly, monthly and yearly backup rule is set to have a full backup in the last backup sequence (day 7, weekly, monthly and yearly backup). However, during the daily backup rotation, an incremental copy is used.
In Vmebu BDR Suite 5.0 RC, we can now use daily full and incremental backups for each of the GFS locks.
- Synthetic full backup
This feature is basically for merging all incremental backups and full backups into the last full backup existing in the backup repository, which means the last backup is always full. There is no need to perform a full backup of incremental backups because this type of backup merges all backups into one full backup.
Example:You back up 7 days a week and choose a full synthetic backup, e.g. on Sunday. So on Sunday you will have a full backup of all incremental backups and a final backup. So if you want, you don't need to create another weekly backup job for a full weekly backup.
You can create weekly or monthly synthetic full backups.
- Backup job template
With this feature, we can now create backup job templates for VMware, Hyper-V or Windows (physical). This is a way to quickly create a job without having to add all the settings every time we create a backup job.
For example, if you want to create backup jobs only for a specific backup repository, you can create a template that only uses backup repository 01. Or, if you want to create backup jobs for databases only, you can create a template that always truncates transition logs whether you use application-aware processing or not.
This is a very useful feature that will save you time when setting up your backup infrastructure.
- Multi-host backup support
Now we can back up different vCenter/ESXi or Hyper-V VMs in the same job. No need to create multiple VM backup jobs from other environments.
- Application item level recovery from web GUI
BDR Suite 5.0 supports item-level recovery for Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, and AD from the BDR Backup Server web GUI. You can choose any restore point and recover individual items in minutes.
Now you can restore any object from AD, Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server or SharePoint with one-click restore option.
- Online backup to Microsoft 365 SharePoint
Vembu Backup for Microsoft 365 now supports backup and recovery of entire SharePoint Online sites, web collections, individual files, folders, and entire document libraries.
- Microsoft 365 Teams backup
Vembu BDR Suite v5.0 RC now supports Microsoft 365 and now we can backup and recover conversations, chats, scheduler, tasks etc. Microsoft 365 Teams.
- Backup for Google Workspace
Vembu BDR Suite v5.0 RC also includes Backup for Google Workspace with support for Backup of Mails, Google Drive, Contacts, Calendar, etc.,
- Backup for AWS
Vembu BDR already supported AWS in previous releases, but now Vembu BDR Suite 5.0 supports agentless, application-consistent backup of AWS EC2 instances.
In addition to the above features, Vembu BDR Suite v5.0 RC also includes some new upgrades and improvements.
Improvements
- You can start restoring while the backup is in progress
- Now the backup job and the offsite copy job can run in parallel
- Improved UI when creating a backup job
- Restore Hyper-V VM backups with original configuration
- Backup window settings at the backup job level
- Backup optimization support for configured backup from BDR backup server
- Support for file-level recovery for dynamic disks
- Ability to disable compression and encryption when storing backup data in a storage repository
Latest thoughts on Vembu BDR Suite v5.0 RC What's new has been released.
I have been following and testing Vembu BDR for some time (about 7 years) and the product has improved a lot, especially in the last 2-3 years. With this new major release, Vembu BDR Suite v5.0 RC, Vembu has done a great job again. Add great features to make it easier for your customers to use your product, and add essential systems support.
We all know that the cloud is the future and backup as a service or cloud DR sites will be used more and more in the future, so Vembu has started to prepare for future technologies and systems that more enterprise organizations will use in the future.
Vembu has rebuilt most of the web interface and improved performance in this release. Now it's easier to look around and select options to complete the tasks you need to add new systems, backup, and restore.
Only one thing I would like to mention in the new interface, in the VM Restore option, we need to do a lot of clicks, and this option should be 1-2 clicks to restore or show the option to completely restore the VM.
Vembu should simplify this option, for example VM replication is just a click away and we are around to do replication settings so normal VM restore should look like.
